Smart city project works are going on satisfactorily at Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) and works worth Rs 300 more will be soon taken up after completing the tendering process.
GVMC Commissioner M Harinarayanan told mediapersons
here on Wednesday that already works worth Rs 650 crore under the smart city project were underway and Rs 200 crore had been spent so far. Smart devices had been installed at the chosen areas and they would go live by the month-end. Electric buses and vehicles would be introduced on the beach road.
He said several works had been taken up within the GVMC limits under the Visakhapatnam-Chennai Industrial Corridor (VCIC) project and they were also proceeding smoothly. GVMC had got $5 million grant for some of these projects. It was also giving a lot of importance to solar energy generation and a 2-MW floating solar unit had been set up on Mudasarlova lake and tenders would be floated for installing a 3-MW solar unit on Meghadrigedda reservoir.
Referring to the ongoing strike by 4,000 contract workers at GVMC from October 4, the GVMC Commissioner said it was unfortunate that the workers had gone on strike, even though G.O. no 279 was not being implemented within the GVMC limits and, even if it were to be implemented, it would in no way affect their working conditions. Alternative arrangements were being made, he said, expressing hope that the strike would end soon.
