The Telangana Government is working on near-term strategy and long-term roadmap to bridge the demand-supply gap in the power scenario in the new State.
While the State currently has access to 4,400 MW, it requires about 7,000 MW. The State is likely to face power shortage for two-three years till it manages to augment fresh capacities. It is hoping to have adequate power to provide 24x7 supply within three years.
Fresh suppliesThe immediate focus is on augmenting fresh supplies procuring power from Chhattisgarh, Karnataka and Central generating stations.
Following a review meting of the power sector by the Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekar Rao, he directed officials of the energy department and transmission corporation to work out modalities to procure additional power and ensure uninterrupted power supply in the State.
It is proposed that the State will seek to have a generation capacity of 20,000 MW, which includes 6,000 MW of the Telangana Genco. To facilitate setting up of new projects, sites at Manuguru and Illandu are being surveyed.
NTPC promiseThe AP Reorganisation Bill provides for a 4,000 MW power plant by NTPC and the Centre has assured to set up this plant in the State.
The government also expects to procure about 2,000 MW from power surplus Chhattisgarh, but is faced with corridor constraints. Now the State is proposing setting up necessary evacuation lines.
The State also hopes to procure about 1500 MW from Northern Grid.
The Energy department has also been asked to consider stepping up power generation from various hydel power sources across all the major river systems passing through the State.
Hydel potentialIt is proposed to tap the hydel potential in Gurramgadda in Krishna river and Kadem on Godavari. The State is estimated to have a potential to add another 500 mw of hydel power generation.
The Chief Minister wanted the energy department to work towards supply of 24x7 power supply within three years. The energy department officials were asked to ensure Telangana gets its share from Krishnapatnam and Sileru projects.
