Providing a big push to solar power generation, the Telangana Government plans to add 2,500 MW solar photo-voltaic power generation capacity by next year.
The State Government, which had invited interest for 2,000 MW of solar power capacity earlier this year, has received overwhelming response with expression of interest to set up more than 6,000 MW solar capacity. It plans to finalise the developers later this month, according to a statement from the Chief Minister’s Office.
The State has adopted an aggressive approach to increasing the solar power generation capacity and plans to take it up to 2,747 MW by next year kharif crop season.
In November 2014, it had allocated 515 MW of solar PV projects. Prior to that, 232 MW of solar projects were inked, and another 2,000 MW would be finalised, taking the proposed capacity to 2,747 MW by next year.
Of this 2,747 MW, 1,000 MW is planned to be installed before March 2016 and before the kharif season (June-July 2016), the entire capacity is proposed to be implemented.
It plans to allot 2,500 MW procurement capacity and expects all of this to come up on a fast track mode by next kharif season ideal to meet the enhanced power requirement from the farm sector community.
This is aimed at ensuring nine hours of power to the farm sector and sees this possible with the setting up of the solar power generation capacity.
Unlike in the past, the developers would be encouraged to set up of solar PV units at locations where there is power shortage during the day time to the farm sector. The deficit in the local district would be bridged by the solar power project.
As a part of the solar push, the State proposes 400 MW in Mahabubnagar, 500 MW in Medak, 600 MW in Nalgonda, 300 MW in Warangal, 300 MW in Karimnagar, 200 MW in Khammam, 400 MW in Nizamabad, 200 MW in Adilabad and 100 MW in Rangareddy (South) districts of the State.
The State Chief Minister is keen to increase the present power generation installed capacity from 4,000 MW to 25,000 MW over the next three-four years.
