The Tamil Nadu Government today made a slew of proposals, including setting up poultry clusters in seven districts, and allotted over Rs 60 crore towards various schemes.

Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa directed setting up 20 veterinary hospitals at a cost of Rs 6 crore in the current year, an official release here said.

Further, with a view to boost poultry production, she has directed creating two poultry clusters, the Villupuram and Sankarankoil zones.

A total of seven districts will be covered under the scheme where the Government will give financial assistance of Rs 20.31 crore for farmers in these districts to set up farms with a capacity of 1,000-5,000, the release said, adding 230 poultry farms were planned to be set up in each of the districts.

She further announced Rs 2.40 crore for setting up poultry units in 16 districts.

Further, in an effort aimed at the fishing community, she announced increasing the quantity of subsidised kerosene supplied to fishermen. The quantum has been increased from 200 to 250 litres. The Government pays a subsidy of Rs 25 per litre for country boats with external engines and this scheme would benefit fishermen in Tuticorin, Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari districts, the release said.

With the Government incurring an additional expenditure of Rs 37.25 lakh for this purpose, Jayalalithaa has approved a sum of Rs 47.60 crore towards it this year, it added.
