The Tamil Nadu government will launch the two-wheeler subsidy scheme for working women and transgenders next month.

Christened as Amma Two Wheeler Scheme, the state government will extend 50 per cent subsidy or ₹25,000, whichever is lower, for the purchase of a moped or less than 126-cc automatic scooter of candidate’s choice, according to an official statement.

Eligibility

The launch of the scheme on February 24 will coincide with the birth anniversary of the former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa.

Women who are self-employed, working in private establishments, organisations supported by the state government, societal organisations and state government industry projects; women contract labourers, Accredited social health activists and women registered with the bodies of organised and unorganised workers, among others can avail themselves of the scheme.

Preference will be given to women living in remote and hilly areas, women who are breadwinners of the family and women who are divorced, unmarried, widowed and orphaned.

The candidate should be in the age group between 18 and 40 years. The beneficiary should be a native and resident of Tamil Nadu.

Also, the applying candidate should possess a valid driving licence and her annual income should not be more than ₹2.5 lakh Since the subsidy is extended with the objective of enhancing the livelihood of working women, the beneficiaries should not sell or transfer the vehicle in the first three years, the statement said.

How to apply?

The applications will be issued at the offices of the district collector, corporation, municipality and panchayat free-of-cost from Monday.

The filled in applications, along with the necessary documents, have to be submitted at the respective offices on or before February 5.

In 2016, the AIADMK election manifesto said the government will offer 50 per cent subsidy to buy a moped or scooter for a working woman.
