The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation and Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) on Thursday signed an agreement for providing LED street lights in the city.

Municipal Commissioner Pravin Kumar and ESSL Managing Director Saurabh Kumar signed the pact.

It paves the way for replacing around 92,000 conventional street lamps with LED lights by EESL and its maintenance for seven years on payment of ₹18.39 crore a year.

Projected initiated More than 70,000 bulbs have already been replaced by ESSL, a joint venture company of PSUs of Ministry of Power and the Government of India, which took up the task after massive damage to streetlights due to Hudhud cyclone last year.

The total project cost is ₹65.76 crore.

Cost benefits Pravin Kumar said it will bring down the consumption from 3.92 crore units a year for the 92,000 lights to 1.49 crore units, and the power bill will reduce from ₹23 crore to ₹.9.7 crore.

He said the operation and maintenance cost were expected to go down over a period of time.

He said EESL will also set up a centrally-controlled monitoring system (CCMS) with cloud-based technology that would enable repairs within 48 hours.

Saurabh Kumar said the project had no upfront cost for GVMC. EESL will be required to ensure 98 per cent success, failing which a penalty will be levied.
