A well-marked low-pressure area lies over the South-West Bay of Bengal and adjoining North-East Sri Lanka (just to the south of South-East Tamil Nadu) awaiting intensification as a depression.
The India Met Department (IMD) expects the intensification to happen over the South-West Bay, off the Tamil Nadu coast and adjoining Equatorial Indian Ocean by Tuesday night or the next morning.
The well-marked ‘low’ brought active North-East monsoon conditions to Kerala during the 24 hours ending on Tuesday morning. Rainfall occurred at most places over Kerala and at many places over Tamil Nadu during this period.
More rain seen
Elsewhere, rains were recorded at many places over Coastal and, North Interior Karnataka, Lakshadweep and at isolated places over South Interior Karnataka, Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
Forecast for Wednesday warned of heavy to very heavy falls at isolated places over Coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry while being heavy at isolated places over south Coastal Andhra Pradesh, South Rayalaseema, South Interior Karnataka and Kerala.
Squally winds speeding up to 50 km/hr gusting to 60 km/hr may prevail over the South-West Bay of Bengal, the Gulf of Mannar and along and off the Tamil Nadu coast.
The sea condition will be ‘rough’ to ‘very rough’ (wave heights of 8ft - 20 ft) over the South-West Bay, the Gulf of Mannar and along and off the Tamil Nadu coast. Fishermen are advised not to venture into these areas.
Pacific system
Strong winds with speeds of up to 40 - to 50 km/hr are likely over interior Tamil Nadu. Thunderstorms accompanied with gusty winds and lightning may lash South Madhya Maharashtra, South Konkan and Goa.
Extended forecast for Sunday to Tuesday (November 25 to 27) said that isolated precipitation likely over extreme South Peninsular India, Lakshadweep and Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
Meanwhile, Tuesday morning’s cyclonic circulation over the Gulf of Siam (Thailand), the gateway for weather systems of Pacific origin, persisted.
The US Joint Typhoon Warning Centre sees scope for this system (tagged ‘32W’), a remnant of erstwhile tropical depression ‘Toraji’ that hit the Vietnam coast, to intensify a round or two.
Eyes Lanka, TN?
A weather tracker of the US National Weather Services lately expects the system to drift into the South Bay and stay on course for a likely rendezvous with the Sri Lanka and adjoining Tamil Nadu coasts over the next 12 days.
There are two other tropical depressions loitering in different parts of the North-West Pacific - ‘33W’ located north-west of Sonsorol (Palau) and ‘34W’ to the south-east of Chuuk (Micronesia).
