Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with US President Donald Trump on the telephone on Monday, a week after Trump assumed office.
“Delighted to speak with my dear friend President Donald Trump. Congratulated him on his historic second term. We are committed to a mutually beneficial and trusted partnership. We will work together for the welfare of our people and towards global peace, prosperity, and security,” Modi posted on the social media platform `X’ on Monday.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar attended Trump’s inaugural ceremony in Washington on January 20 following an official invitation. He also participated in the Quad Foreign Ministers’ meeting in Washington DC on Tuesday.
Trump warned India of reciprocal tariffs during his election campaign, as India has a trade surplus with the US. In his America First Trade Policy, released shortly after his swearing-in, Trump said that the US Department of Commerce should recommend appropriate measures, such as a global supplemental tariff or other policies, to remedy the US’ trade deficits.
The US is India’s top trading partner, with exports to the US valued at $77.5 billion in FY24.
