The Chennai Traffic Police and a Tafe, a leading tractor and farm equipment manufacturer, will together launch a campaign against noise pollution on the city’s roads.

They have launched a fortnight-long drive Voice Against Noise (VAN) in association with the Chennai Traffic Police’s ‘No Honking’ Campaign.

The initiative beginning Friday will go on up to December 8, with students taking the message to the streets of Chennai. They will reach out to motorists with campaign material such as banners, posters, and stickers to encourage motorists to avoid honking unless absolutely necessary. A poster design contest will also be organised from November 22 to November 27. The details of the contest based on the campaign theme are available on Tafe’s Facebook page. The shortlisted posters will be used as the official posters for the campaign for display at malls, offices, restaurants and places of public interest to spread the message.

Chennai’s traffic is seeing unabated and indiscriminate honking, making it one of the biggest irritants on the road leading to increased noise pollution and avoidable road rage, the release said.

Welcoming Tafe’s corporate citizenship initiative, A. Arun, IPS, Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic – North) said, “For some who are on wheels, it has become second nature to honk continuously even when it isn’t warranted. They are not in the know of its harmful effects on the ear drums of the hapless pedestrians and public on road for various purposes. TAFE’s timely initiative to keep the city roads calm is appreciated.”
