India’s best known sports magazine Sportstar is set for a re-launch on Wednesday across the country in a new format.

In Chennai, tennis stalwart Ramanathan Krishnan will release the first copy. Simultaneously, top sportsmen and women have been lined up for releasing the new issue in other cities.

First published as Sport & Pastime by Kasturi and Sons, publishers of The Hindu and Business Line , to give Indian sport a new perspective in the wake of Independence, the magazine established its primacy thanks to the articles and features from renowned writers such as Neville Cardus, Jack Fingleton, S. K. Gurunathan, Alex Bannister and top columnists in each discipline.

Renamed in 1978 as The Sportstar , while retaining its flavour and freshness, the magazine switched to the tabloid form before reverting to the magazine format in 1980.

In response to readers feedback as well from advertisers and marketers, Sportstar is being re-launched , timing it with the Olympic Games in London.

The Sportstar Olympic Special , which will be on sale from tomorrow, contains a wealth of information and in-depth articles.

Among the many well wishers on the launch is Jacques Rogge, President, International Olympic Committee.

In a message, the IOC Chief, a triple Olympian (1968, 72, 76) in yachting, writes, “Fans of the Olympic Games are an integral part of the every edition of the Games. Their passion for sport and support of the athletes has helped make the Games what they are today, the world’s greatest sporting spectacle.”
