Inside the Mahabodhi Temple complex at Bodh Gaya. Buddhist traditions say that in circa 500 BC Prince Gautama Siddhartha, wandering as an ascetic, reached the sylvan banks of the Phalgu, near the city of Gaya. There he sat in meditation under a bodhi tree (Ficus religiosa). Photo: P.V. Sivakumar
Terror struck the world famous Buddhist pilgrimage town of Bodh Gaya where nine low-intensity serial blasts rocked the Mahabodhi Temple complex and adjacent areas on Sunday, leaving two monks injured. The Mahabodhi Temple and the Bodhi tree, which is frequented by Buddhist pilgrims from Sri Lanka, China, Japan and Vietnam, did not suffer any damage in the blasts which shook the early morning peace of the holy town.
