The Eastern Naval Command (ENC) here is doing everything possible to mitigate the calamity Chennai city is facing due to torrential rains for several days and two ships have been sent to Chennai so far for relief work, according to Vice-Admiral Satish Soni, the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief.
He told mediapersons here on Thursday that on December 2 (Wednesday) INS Airavat had left Vizag for Chennai carrying a helicopter and relief material. On Thursday, INS Shakti, a tanker, was being sent there with a helicopter and relief material. He said approximately 250 Naval personnel were involved in relief and rescue operations in the city, being co-ordinated from Navy office, Chennai. The Naval base (INS Adayar) was being used as a helicopter base, he added. Six teams with 12 boats had been deployed at various locations in the city. Till now, 225 persons had been rescued and medical teams were also kept ready.
Vice-Admiral Soni said INS Rajali (Arakkonam) was being used as a hub for fixed wing aircraft. A medical camp had been set up in a neighbouring village, Cheyyur, for giving assistance.
He said men and material were being kept ready for any further assistance to Chennai and the ENC would respond immediately.
