Uber Eats – the food delivery service from app cab player Uber – is eyeing “aggressive expansion” in India as it targets new cities.

Some of the cities that the company could explore include Guwahati, Lucknow, Ahmedabad and so on.

According to Bhavik Rathod, Head, Uber Eats India, the company will also be deepening its presence in the existing 11 cities.

“We are looking to expand in existing cities and also enter new ones this year,” he told reporters on the sidelines of the launch of the service in Kolkata.

Rathod points out that expansion would also entail adding more restaurants to its portfolio. At present, it has over 12,000 restaurant partners in the 11-odd cities; and the number is expected to increase by nearly “three times” within December this year.

“We are looking to shore up the number of restaurant partners. By the end of this year, we should have some three times more partners,” he said.

Uber Eats began in Los Angeles in 2014 as a small delivery pilot. It was hived off into a separate application in December 2015 in Toronto. Today, it is a stand-alone app available in over 200 cities.

In India, it was launched in Mumbai in May 2017. Uber Eats competes with the likes of Foodpanda, Order by Zomato and Swiggy.

According to Rathod, the company would look to integrate promotional offers of Uber Eats with its ride-sharing platform, Uber. Other business models surrounding Uber Eats could also be explored.
