US Vice President JD Vance is in India with his family on a four-day official visit and is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi later on Monday to discuss bilateral economic and strategic issues, including the on-going trade pact talks.
In a post on social media platform X on Monday, MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal welcomed Vance, his wife Usha Vance and the US delegation accompanying them. Vance was received by Railways and I&B Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw at the airport.
“The official visit (April 21-24) spanning Delhi, Jaipur and Agra is expected to further deepen the India–US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership,” Jaiswal stated in his tweet.
Apart from his meeting with Modi, the US VP’s visit is largely personal. He will attend a wedding in Jaipur with his wife and children and also visit the Taj Mahal in Agra.
Vance’s meeting with Modi is likely to include discussions on US President Donald Trump’s reciprocal tariffs, that have been paused till July 8, and the ongoing talks on the proposed India-US bilateral trade agreement (BTA).
A delegation of top officials from India will travel to Washington DC this week to meet their US counterparts to discuss the possibility of an early tranche of the BTA that could convince the Trump government not to re-impose reciprocal tariffs on July 9. India also wants the US to roll back the 10 per cent baseline tariffs imposed on almost all imports this month.
US continued to be India’s top export destination in FY25 with exports of $ 86.51 billion contributing to over 19 per cent of the country’s exports. India’s imports from the US were at $45.33 billion.
