The Mar Thoma Church in Bengaluru has used electric wire sleeves and packaging straps to create a Christmas tree this festive season .

The church had set the trend, of using recycled or eco-friendly materials to create Christmas trees, in 2008. According to a member of the church, the idea has been executed for 11 consecutive years.

“About 20 members of the Church have been working on this every evening, for the past three weeks. This year we have used electric wire sleeves and packaging straps to make the Christmas tree, which is about 25 feet tall. The decorations inside the Church are made from electric wire sleeves,” Daniel Thomas, a member of the Mar Thoma Church, told Businessline.

To mark its eleventh anniversary, the church is also holding a carol service on Sunday, December 23, at 6 pm. Different choirs, including children and senior citizens would be singing on the occasion.

He added, “ In the year 2008, when we had started using eco-friendly and recycled materials, we used plastic bottles and old tyres; in 2009, old video tapes and plastic bags were converted into decorations. In 2010, we used dry vegetables and grass and in 2011 it was jacquard loom cards.”

He also explained that in 2012 the tree was created using newspapers. In 2013, the members of the church used plastic covers, while in 2014 over 500 soft drink bottles were used to make a grand green tree. Thomas also said that in the following year, cloth scraps from tailors and garment manufacturers were used. In 2016, however, corrugated boxes were used to make the Christmas tree. Last year, they made a Christmas tree with straw and coconut shells.
