Once again targets have been set for connecting the country’s villages digitally. Though this has been pursued for several years, it has fallen short for one reason or the other. The NDA government has now set a new target: by the end of this fiscal year it will link 50,000 villages with broadband connectivity, another one lakh hamlets by 2015-16, and yet another one lakh rural households by 2016-17. It is also planning a new policy to generate business process outsourcing (BPO) jobs for youth in small towns, to ensure they do not have to leave their states to earn a livelihood.
