Eid-ul-Fitr, which marks the culmination of the fasting month of Ramzan, is being celebrated across the country on Wednesday as the moon was sighted here on Tuesday evening.
Jama Masjid Shahi Imam Syed Ahmed Bukhari made the announcement after a meeting of the moon-sighting committee here.
President Ram Nath Kovind greeted fellow citizens Eid.
Home Minister Amit Shah extended also Eid greetings and hoped the festival would bring peace and happiness for everyone.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi Wednesday greeted people on Id-ul-Fitr, saying may this day ignite the spirit of harmony.
Eid-ul-Fitr symbolises peace and brotherhood. The festival is marked with feasts and the faithful offers prayers at mosques as well as idgahs to seek blessings of the divine.
People, especially children dress up in their traditional fineries to mark the festival.
