The death toll in last month’s collapse of a building that housed mostly garment factories in Bangladesh has risen to more than 1,000, officials said on Friday.

Rescuers have been retrieving bodies from the eight-storey Rana Plaza building in Savar near Dhaka, since it collapsed on April 24, a day after factory managers ignored the appearance of cracks in the building.

An official at the disaster management control room said rescuers had recovered 1,032 bodies from the rubble.

The rescue crew were removing the concrete wreckage in search of more bodies believed to be trapped inside, army Captain Shahnewaz Zakaria said.

More than 2,400 people were injured in the collapse.
