Indian women are the biggest participants of adventure tourism sector in South Africa with a majority of them taking part in sports like bungee jumping, sky diving, shark diving and mountain trail, a senior country official said today.

“The adventure tourism in South Africa is driven by Indian women. We sell more hardcore adventure to Indian women than any other segment,” Country Head, South African Tourism, Hanneli Slabber, said here.

The Bungee jumping activity in Cape Town has been visited by 20,000 Indian women during the last year, she said, adding that majority of the adventure sports like sky diving, shark diving and mountain trail has Indian women as the biggest takers.

South Africa has the third highest commercial bungee jump in the world at 216 metres.

Slabber said the South African tourism industry is looking at Indian markets to increase the foreign footfalls.

“Currently we have 1.26 lakh Indians visiting South Africa. These are Indian passport holders who live in India.

We are intending to double the footfall in the year to come,” Slabber added.

South African tourism department has initiated ‘Learn South Africa’ program in the country which kick—started today in coastal state of Goa.

She said the program will be taken to 14 other Indian cities till August 4.

The South African tourism officers will travel to Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Delhi, Jalandhar, Lucknow, Kolkata, Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, Chennai, Trichy, Bangalore, Cochin and Nagpur.
