The last two reactors at the ravaged nuclear power plant in north-eastern Japan were to be decommissioned, operator Tokyo Electric Power Co said Wednesday.
The decision to scrap reactors 5 and 6 at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station came after Prime Minister Shinzo Abe urged the operator in September to permanently shut down the two units.
The two reactors were idled when the plant was struck by the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami.
In May 2011, the operator decided to decommission the other four reactors after three suffered meltdowns and the fourth was damaged.
The Government said it would take more than four decades to scrap all the reactors. Japan has never decommissioned a nuclear reactor.
