Rohit Parasar, 25, is an M Sc in Applied Economics with work experience of about a year-and-a-half. He is currently Senior Research Fellow with the MS Swaminathan Research Foundation.

Rohit hopes for higher tax slabs in the Budget. “For young professionals living in an expensive city like Chennai, it will be of much help if the base tax slab is increased,” he says.

This will help him save more. He also wants the Finance Minister to provide more tax-saving avenues to deploy the money.

Personal expectations apart, speaking as an economist, he says, “I believe it is high time to invest in human capital. India needs a strong, affordable, primary education system.

“Positive policies for teachers, accredited social health activists (ASHA) and Anganwadi workers in terms of technological and monetary advancements will be useful. Also, India should invest in higher education and research in more meaningful ways so that its institutions are on par with other credible institutions in the world.”

Rohit also wants more allocation to the PDS system to help streamline it and ensure nutrition-rich food for children. He wants India to improve its tax base and feels that reduction in the tax rate could do the trick.

Rohit acknowledges that the Finance Minister has a tough job. “Budgeting for an individual’s expense in itself is difficult.

So, taking several points of view and then making allocations is a very challenging task,” he adds.
