I have to confess to being baffled at some of the choices Micromax makes. Time and again. The company’s new Canvas Infinity brings with it one of the biggest things in phone fashion these days — virtually bezel-less displays. Like some of the top phones (Galaxy S8, Note 8, LG G6 and Q6), the Infinity shrinks the edges to give you more screen space in a body that so far had fat borders taking up real estate. But I have a bit of a theory about these tiny edged displays. They look good when seen in relation to the world beyond them. Once you’re immersed in the display, watching something, you no longer notice the edges. But be that as it may, the Infinity is yet another 18:9 ratio display and that too at an unbeatable price of ₹10,000.

But — and there is a big but — you get little else. The display, which should have been glorious, is low-res 720p, doesn’t come with the best viewing angles, isn’t great outdoors in the sun, and the colours are slightly off.

Although the Infinity comes with Android 7.1.2, which even some flagships haven’t caught up with yet, it is heavily and strangely customised and so, doesn’t really run smooth. Rather than keeping it simple, Micromax has unnecessarily obfuscated settings. For example, why do we have Smart Action and Smart Gesture (just one)? What exactly is an Auxiliary Mode? Why would you have a setting called Answer by Mistake? Apparently it is to “Don’t turn on screen when your phone is in your pocket and you received a call in order to don’t answer by mistake.” I’m confused. Everyone isn’t an Android pro, and I can imagine many being quite mixed up on what to select here or even whether to touch the setting at all.

The Infinity runs on a Snapdragon 425 with 3 GB RAM and 32 GB storage. It’s a dual-SIM phone and comes with an expandable storage option. The battery is a 2,900 mAh. The mediocre cameras are 16 MP and 13 MP. While that sounds good, as a package it’s difficult to recommend the Canvas Infinity, even at its price. The killer feature isn’t going to make Micromax’s competition even twitch in discomfort.
