It was launched by Mr Suresh Prabhu, Chairman, Council on Energy, Environment and Water and former Minister of Environment and Power.

CII said the Greenco rating system got a tremendous response from the industry as more than 20 big companies have signed up for this innovative rating system at the spot. Godrej, ITC, Wipro, Dr Reddy's Lab, Mahindra group, Jubilant, Bosch, JCB, Jindal Steel, ACC, Ambuja Cement were some of the companies which signed up for this performance related rating system.

“It is voluntary for companies to seek the ratings,” said Mr K.S.Venkatagiri, Principal Counsellor at CII.
“By end 2013, we see some 1000 companies going for it,” he added.
Developed over the past 12-18 months, the framework has inputs from the US Environment Protection Authority and research agencies in Switzerland.
