The Supreme Court today upheld conviction of Gopal and Sushil Ansal in 1997 Uphaar fire tragedy case.
A two-judge Bench has differed on the quantum of punishment for Ansals.
Hence, the issue on quantum of punishment has been referred to a three-judge Bench in view of the difference in opinion between the two judges.
The Supreme Court observed that the Ansals were more concerned about making money than ensuring safety of cinemagoers. "A contemptuous disregard to law by owners of Uphaar cinema hall led to loss of lives," it said.
