Cheaper flat panel TVs excite consumers

In an era when inflation is hitting Indian’s household budgets, any price reduction, big or small, helps.

Haridwar-based Poonam Dhiman, who works in a government school, believes she can junk her old CRT TV to buy a flat panel TV. She said, “I hear LED and LCD TVs will get cheaper. I will now look to upgrade from our old CRT TV to an LED TV. My parents’ anniversary is next month; I may look at buying one as a gift.”

Domestic players believe this will help them make inroads in smaller cities and rural regions.

Even students or young executives, who move away from home for higher education or jobs, may benefit. Though companies are still working on specifics, prices may reduce by ₹350-500.

Vidur Sharma, who lives as a paying guest in Mumbai said, “Reduction in the price of the small size flat panel TVs will encourage young executives and students who live in PGs and hostels to buy their individual TVs.”

Delhi based businessman Vipin Arora said, “Not just in small cities, even in big cities there are people who still own CRT TVs and would look to upgrade to flat panel LCD and LEDs.” He said his friends still haven’t done away with their CRT TVs despite owning large size flat panel TVs, and may finally do so.

“One always looks at a second TV option especially for kids who want to watch something else. One may think of buying a smaller size flat panel TV for the kids’ room, while the bigger one remains in the parents’ room,” he said.
