The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) on Friday approved the procurement of 244 Air Defence guns, worth ₹7,000 crore, for the Indian Air Force under the Buy (India), Make in India scheme.

This contract is for 61 flights with four guns each under the Close-In Weapons System (CIWS), which is basically an integrated system with radars, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), sensors and target lights. With the DAC approving the proposal the tenders will floated inviting domestic vendors, according to sources. The DAC, chaired by Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, also gave its nod to acquire weapons and sensors package for Project 17A stealth frigates for the Indian Navy.

This will also be outsourced to Indian defence equipment manufacturers under the ‘Make in India’ campaign.

“Approval of DAC has been accorded for procurement on single vendor basis as they are already being used in the Indian Navy… Cases are to be initiated now,” an official said.

The Project 17A stealth frigates are seen as one of the flagship projects under the ‘Make in India’ campaign. This will be an upgraded version of Project 17 Shivalik-class frigate. Under this a total of seven ships will be built at Mazgaon Dock and Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE).

The last meeting of DAC was held on February 23 where acquisition proposals cleared in the last two years were reviewed. It is likely to next meet by the end of this month to finalise the Defence Procurement Procedure (DPP) 2016.
