The opportunity in damage control
So now there is a big Samsung brand recall. Will this affect the brand badly?

Rohit, Samsung pulls back as many as 2.5 million handsets. That's big, for sure! Will this affect brand Samsung? Well, yes and no. On the brand front, it has been very careful to insulate the brand. It has been quick to isolate the issue to the battery. It has been equally nifty in its communication. Clarity has been the hallmark of this communication. And consumers appreciate that.
Samsung has decided on a quick pull-back, and has even postponed its next mega launch by two weeks.
In terms of financials the company is going to incur a loss of over $900 million on this count. It has, however, decided to take the issue head on. Pulling out 2.5 million handsets for 34 incidents is good action, demonstrative of its keen brand thinking. I do believe Samsung has even used this incident to good advantage. It has used all the attention it is getting to showcase its fallibility and consumer love.
The startup ecosystem is in the throes of agony. Am I right?

Pavithra, all businesses agonise. The startup ecosystem is going through it a bit early, for sure.
Some entrepreneurs have confessed to breakdowns as others have actually started a hobby as they leave the workspace under pressure of every kind.
The Indian entrepreneur has abundant fire in his belly. So much that failure is construed to be not-right. This fire in the belly is a positive when business is good, and a big ulcer when business is tanking. Time to acknowledge the also-ran status that many of us acknowledged on the sports field. We forgot that in our theory classes in our great big management schools. And that causes heartburn.
Depression is very common in the startup ecosystem. We need a whole big counselling eco-system to fall into place. The micro and benign counselling business is a start-up opportunity of high value on its own. And I use the word “value” in two manners of speaking. Both appropriate.
