The workers of Hindusthan Zinc Limited have appealed to the management to resume production at the zinc smelter here as soon as possible. Production was halted three months ago.

Mr K. R. Ramamohana Rao, the general secretary of the Zinc Smelter Mazdoor Sangh, said in a press release that the management had stopped production here on the pretext that production had come down at the mines in Rajasthan. He said the management was planning to close down the unit, citing high cost of production, and it had sent out 400 contract workers already. The attitude of the management was causing concern to the 375 permanent employees as well and they were worried about their future, he said.

He said there was no justification for halting production here and the company had earned huge profits during the 2011-12 financial year. Therefore, the management should not do anything that would jeopardise the future of workers. He sought the support of all sections to get the production resumed.

He said the workers had been staging demonstrations peacefully for the past few days and they would intensify the agitation, if the management did not heed to their pleas.
