Footwear and apparel maker Woodland has tied up with UNICEF to promote a water, sanitation and hygiene campaign (WASH) in Assam. This is the third year of their tie-up.

The idea of the partnership is to support UNICEF’s efforts to advocate the importance of safe drinking water, sanitation and hygiene.

Over the last two years, Woodland has contributed approximately Rs 1.25 crore towards the programme, the company said in a release.

UNICEF, under the programme, has so far trained over 40 teachers, 100 school management committees, over 200 mother group members, and 2,000 children across the region.

According to the company release, mass hand washing facility has also been installed in 20-odd schools in Assam by UNICEF. Nearly 74 per cent of the elementary schools are provided with clean drinking water and 79 per cent girls and 56 per cent boys have access to toilets.

A team consisting of Woodland and UNICEF representatives has visited some of the rural primary schools in Kamrup district of Assam.

According to Harkirat Singh, MD, Woodland, the company started with a voluntary collection with every invoice. It was later scaled up with revenues from limited edition T-Shirts specially launched for the programme.
