Yamaha Motor India has launched Alpha, an automatic scooter targeting the family category.

This segment is considered to be a huge market which all scooter manufacturers seek to target.

Alpha incorporates practical functions such as comfort, storage and handling in a modern and refined body design. It is developed to serve as an “easy to go and high utility city mover.”

62 km/litre Alpha has an air-cooled 4-stroke 113cc engine with continuous variable transmission that delivers smooth start-up acceleration and pick-up.

It offers a mileage of 62 km a litre and is priced at ₹48,584 ex-showroom, Hyderabad. Roy Kurian, Vice-President, Sales and Marketing, Yamaha Motor India Sales, said, “We see a lot of potential for the scooter market in India as we expect it to reach 3.6 million units in 2014. The launch of the ‘Alpha’ for the family customers is in sync with our strategy. After receiving a brilliant response for the Ray and Ray Z it was time we introduced a product for a much larger target audience.”

The scooter will be manufactured by India Yamaha Motor and marketed by Yamaha Motor India Sales, which expects to sell about 200,000 units in the country within a year.

Yamaha entered the Indian scooter category in 2012 with RAY designed for young women, followed by RAY Z in 2013 intended for young men. Both have sold about 180,000 units by the end of 2013.
