In an unprecedented move, the State CID (criminal investigation department) has summoned city-based industrialist G.P. Goenka, head of Duncans Industries, over the closure of tea gardens and alleged worker deaths.
Duncans has 13 tea estates in North Bengal.
While some senior officials of the company are said to have gone to the CID headquarters in south Kolkata this morning around 10 am, it is not known if GP Goenka has himself gone to the CID. It could not be independently verified.
CID officials and the Goenkas did not respond to calls or SMS’ sent by BusinessLine on the matter.
