Online recruitment activity has witnessed an 11 per cent rise in April 2014 compared to the corresponding period last year, job portal Monster.com said on Thursday.

“IT (software/hardware) and travel/tourism industry sectors have witnessed a growing trend. Engineering, cement, construction, iron/steel sectors also displayed an uptrend in recruitment levels. Demand for hiring senior management professionals has seen a noteworthy incline across occupational groups. The Monster Employment Index for April gives us the confidence that job opportunities will demonstrate a positive trend in coming months,” said Sanjay Modi, Managing Director, Monster.com (India/Middle-East/South East Asia).

The index reveals that travel and tourism; and IT (hardware, software) saw higher demand for talent between April 2013 and 2014; up 32 per cent each respectively.

Sector-wise data

Online recruitment in the automotive/ancillaries/tyres sector was down 10 per cent as the sector continues to chart fewer opportunities vis-à-vis the corresponding period a year-ago.

Among industry sectors, chemicals/ plastic/ rubber, paints, fertiliser/ pesticides (down 19 per cent) saw the most notable decline in recruitment activity, according to the index.

Among cities, Ahmedabad (up 26 per cent) supplanted Bangalore (up 22 per cent) to lead all monitored cities in long-term growth.

Except Chennai (up five per cent), all major cities recorded a double digit growth between April 2013 and 2014 — Mumbai (up 14 per cent); Delhi-NCR (up 10 per cent) and Hyderabad (up 11 per cent) respectively. Coimbatore (down 21 per cent) recorded the steepest annual decline among all cities monitored by the index.
