A major blast in Sigachi Industries, one of the largest manufacturers of cellulose excipients, plant claimed eight lives and left 26 workers injured.

According to police, the blast occurred in the early hours of Monday in the company’s manufacturing unit located in Pashmylaram industrial area here. The building in which the blast occurred has been totally damaged and 11 fire-tenders were pressed into service to douse the fire.  While five workers died on the spot, three succumbed to injuries later.

The injured have been rushed to nearby private hospitals and further investigation is on. Sagachi Industries scrip lost 11.87 per cent on the BSE on Monday to close at at ₹48.63.

The Hyderabad-based drug maker operates five State of the art facilities, located in Hyderabad, Sultanpur, Jhagadia, Dahej & Raichur. Apart from its major areas of formulations, Sigachi recently entered tinot coatings market to harness growth potential.

Early this month, the ₹500 crore company (FY25) inaugurated its state-of-the-art Research and Development (R&D) Center in Hyderabad, as part of its measures to consolidate API development and analytical capabilities under one roof.
