Scooter or motorcycle – are you confused what to go for, as you have to compromise either on mileage or convenience? Here is a new technology engine from TVS Motor Company “that is 20 per cent more fuel efficient and is usable both in scooters and motorcycles”.

TVS Motor today announced the development of the new technology engine termed TVS Automatic Transmission. According to Mr Harne Vinay Chandrakant, President, New Product Development, TVS Motor Company, the engine can be used for two-wheelers across platforms – be it scooter, motorcycle or stepthru.

Cost-effective

The new technology, besides being convenient for the users, will be very cost-effective for the manufacturer too as the manufacturer does not have to have two separate lines for scooter engines and motorcycle engines.

“There will be a greater economy of scale, and that too with very minimal investment and changes in the existing manufacturing lines, we can start producing the new engines,” said Mr Chandrakant.

The technology

He said, the technology developed by the company employs an automatic transmission in place of conventional CVT (continuously variable transmission) technology, which changes gears through electronic control. This enables the engine to run at its most efficient RPM (revolutions per minute) for different operating conditions.

Elaborating on the objective of the development, Mr Chandrakant said the idea is to deliver a compact engine layout that will deliver enhanced fuel efficiency and which is usable across product forms. This technology also cuts exhaust emission in scooters while providing for low floor board and space for luggage.

It took seven years for the company to develop this technology in association with various agencies and universities. “We are going to deploy this technology in our models from the year 2013,” he said. The company plans to first roll out a scooter with this technology in 2013.
