The need for stepping up the movement towards total quality management in the Indian manufacturing sector and introducing a subject on quality management in the university curriculum were stressed at meeting organised by the Hyderabad chapter of Quality Circle Forum of India on Monday.
The Andhra Pradesh Governor, Mr E.S.L. Narasimhan, said: “We have compromised quality for quantity. A mid-course correction is essential for the Indian industry to remain competitive.”
He was in favour of making employees in the manufacturing sector as stakeholders of the companies.
Mr P.S. Ramamohan Rao, former Governor of Tamil Nadu, said quality management should essentially by made part of the university curriculum. The Indian industry leadership has embraced total quality management, including at the CEO level, as much as it should have.
“Total quality management has not struck deep roots in the Indian manufacturing sector,” he said, adding that India should target a contribution by the manufacturing sector of 25 per cent of the country Gross National Product.
