Karnataka made an investment pitch to Slovenian companies, by offering investment opportunities in infrastructure and power projects.

The State's Large and Medium Industries Minister, Mr Murugesh R. Nirani, speaking at the CII-Karnataka meet on ‘Slovenia-India: Coming Together,' said Karnataka has the distinct advantage in having abundant skilled labour and a peaceful industrial climate. “Our State is very proactive in attracting investments and we have brought sectoral policies to encourage industries in our State.”

The State gives major thrust on infrastructutre development. Mr Nirani said, “Infrastructure being a key driver of economy, we have identified about 100 projects to be implemented on public-private partnerships (PPP) basis which involves an investment of more than Rs 68,000 crore (ie 10.62 billion euros or $15.10 billion).”

Land is a key basic infrastructure to set up industry and “keeping this in mind, the State has created a land bank. We have identified about one lakh areas under the scheme. Of which we have already issued notification to acquire lands of about 83,000 areas,” said Mr Nirani.

The Karnataka Government has also taken numerous initiatives to augment the power generation. Several projects have been taken up by the state government and also by the private sector.

These projects would make the State self sufficient in power by 2016. Talking about special economic zones (SEZ), Mr Nirani said of the 52 SEZs approved in the State, nearly 20 are operational. These SEZs offer plug and play sort of infrastructure.

Speaking on the occasion, the Prime Minister of Slovenia, Mr Borut Pahor, said, “Our country is too small to finance itself. We need foreign investments. Bangalore is the third stop for me to interact and with business people.”

The Prime Minister said Slovenia has expertise in areas like automotive, IT, renewable energy-hydro power, biogas, health and pharmaceuticals, electrical and electronics, transport and communications, port and logistics, engineering, auto components, chemicals and tourism, which hold great potential to be explored between the two countries.

Geo-strategic position of Slovenia located on the cross-roads of transport routes, has well-developed ICT and physical infrastructure, technological networks and platforms, centres of excellence and clusters.

“This makes it a location of choice for business. Strong commercial contacts across Eastern and South-eastern Europe, a deep-sea port and the extensive transport network give easy access to 500 million consumers in Europe,” said Mr Pahor.
