The Union Chemicals and Fertilisers Minister, Mr M.K. Alagiri, today requested the Civil Aviation Minister, Mr Vayalar Ravi, to take immediate steps to declare New Madurai airport as an international airport for the industrial development of the southern districts of Tamil Nadu.
The Minister brought to Mr Ravi’s notice the vast scope for export of vegetables, textiles and fruits from Madurai region.
He also pointed out that there is heavy passenger traffic from Madurai region to various international destinations, an official release said here.
Later, speaking to the media, Mr Alagiri said he was satisfied with the work he has done for his constituency. “I think I have fulfilled my poll promises. If you (reporters) have any demand (for public), please let me know and I will implement them.’’
He said the Chief Minister, Mr M. Karunanidhi, would lay the foundation stone for the Cauvery drinking water project at Hogenakkal and inaugurate the extension of Madurai Government Rajaji hospital and that they were awaiting a due date from him.
