This week at sale no 31, the total offerings (packages) at three North Indian auction centres were 3,94,808 compared with 3,31,054 in the corresponding sale of last year, according to J Thomas & Company Pvt Ltd, the tea auctioneers.

At Kolkata, the total offerings were 1,88,572 (1,64, 604), comprising 1,48,570 (1, 07,696) of CTC/dust, 31,378 (50,381) of orthodox and 8,624 (6,527) of Darjeeling.

The corresponding figures for Guwahati and Siliguri were 1, 19,937 (98,640) and 86,299 (67,810) respectively.

Assam CTC leaf teas continued to ease in value while Dooars were irregularly lower. Dusts met with better demand at irregularly lower rates. Tata Global was active for dusts but offered only fair support in the leaf category. There was fair enquiry from Hindustan Unilever. Western India dealers were active at lower levels for the liquoring sorts. There was good support from local and other internal sections. Exporters operated on bolder brokens and grainy fannings.

Selected tippy Orthodox offerings continued to sell. The remainder were around last year's levels except the smaller brokens which met with less demand and saw some withdrawals. Good enquiries were there from Continental buyers for the tippy sorts. Local dealers operated on the fannings and smaller brokens. North India operated on the bolder whole leaf.

Selected Darjeeling whole leaf grades maintaining quality sold well while the remainder were irregularly lower. Brokens and fannings grades followed a similar trend. Traditional exporters to Continent and Japan operated. Local dealers operated for cheaper sorts.
