Tea production in the first quarter of current calendar has declined by 12.82 per cent, reveals an analysis of the latest data available with the Tea Board and traders' bodies.
Between January and March, the country produced 82.29 million kg (mkg) against 94.39 mkg in the corresponding months of 2011.
This shortfall of 12.10 mkg marks a decline of 12.82 per cent.
The largest decline of 8.03 mkg has happened in North India where production totalled 37.52 mkg.
Production declined in all the regions except Cachar where there was a marginal increase.
The output in the largest producing belt of Assam declined by 7.32 mkg to dip to 19.87 mkg.
Darjeeling produced 4.11 lakh kg against 5.88 lakh kg last year.
In the South, production posted decline in Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka.
Collectively, Southern output declined by 4.07 mkg to dip to 44.77 mkg.
Tamil Nadu lost 2.60 mkg to total 3.03 mkg while Kerala lost 1.44 mkg to dip to 13.31 mkg.
