The ‘surprise weather package’ for a freezing North-West India may have started to unravel already.

A weather-altering ‘intense’ western disturbance is making a delayed entry into the region and will drive away the prevailing cold wave conditions from North-West India and the plains in the North in general, the India Met Department (IMD) said.

Western disturbances are known for their moisture-laden winds and help form clouds, generate warmth, besides triggering snow in the hills and thundershowers along the plains. And this is exactly what is happening right now.

‘Well-endowed’

But it will be a couple of days before the incoming one digs in deep and influences weather over the eastern parts of Central India and the Interior Peninsula, where cold wave conditions may persist at isolated pockets. The IMD located the disturbance over North Pakistan and adjoining Jammu & Kashmir, having travelled all the way from the Mediterranean, West-Central Asia and Afghanistan, which is the normal route.

It is ‘well-endowed’ in the sense that it has induced the formation of a cyclonic circulation over North Rajasthan, which is what happens when the disturbance mops up incremental moisture from the North Arabian Sea.

The IMD sees isolated heavy snowfall over Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand from Friday to Sunday.

Isolated hailstorms are likely over Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh on Saturday and Sunday.

N-E monsoon ends

Meanwhile, the IMD also announced that the Year 2018 North-East monsoon has drawn to a close over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala and adjoining Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, with effect from Wednesday (January 2).
