A low-pressure area has formed over north-east Rajasthan on Thursday even as its parent, an incoming powerful western disturbance, lay in wait just across the international border over North-East Pakistan.

As was only to be expected, parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand were treated to sustained rains/snow as associated clouding extended across to Afghanistan, Turmenistan, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan.

Rain, thundershowers

The ‘low’ went on to engineer pulsating spells of rain or thundershowers at a few places over Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, West Uttar Pradesh, North-West Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and East Madhya Pradesh during the 24 hours ending in the morning.

True to forecasts, it also set off hailstorms at isolated places over Jammu and Kashmir, Rajasthan, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and West Madhya Pradesh in a near replication of what had transpired last week.

The weather instability was brought about as the westerly to north-westerly winds associated with the ‘low’ interacted with tropical easterly winds from the Bay of Bengal guided by an anticyclonic circulation in the lower levels.

The disturbed weather conditions could persist for another day (Friday) over the hills and plains of North-West India as well as the adjoining Central India. Isolated heavy rain/snow is likely over Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh during this period.

The India Met Department (IMD) maintained its look-out for a follow-up western disturbance to roll in across the international border and start affecting the hills from the weekend (February 17).

Follow-up system

Resulting severe weather could impact the plains of North-West India from the very next day (February 18). The entire western Himalayan region could slip under alternating spells of rain, snow and hailstorm during this phase.

Meanwhile, strong winds kicked up by the resident ‘low’ over Rajasthan could generate winds speeding up to 40 km/hr and gusting to 50 km/hr over the plains of North-West India and adjoining Central India on Friday.

An IMD outlook for the day said that thunderstorms accompanied with hailstorms and gusty winds could break out over Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, East Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Bihar and Telangana.
