The government on Tuesday hiked the minimum support price (MSP) for dehusked coconut to ₹2,700 a quintal for the 2020 season from the earlier price of ₹2,571, facilitating better rates for millions of small-holder farmers for freshly harvested mature nuts, an official release said.
In March this year, the government had increased MSP for fair average quality milling copra to ₹9,960 per quintal from the earlier ₹9,521 and that of ball copra to ₹10,300 from ₹9,920.
The latest MSP hike for dehusked coconut, Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar said, would ensure immediate cash to small farmers, who are unable to hold the product or havei insufficient facilities for copra making. This will be a relief to the coconut farmers, who are already affected by the pandemic and the consequent disruption in the supply chain, the Minister said.
