Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Coastal Andhra Pradesh received varying amounts of rainfall at isolated places during the 24 hours ending on Wednesday morning as the North-East monsoon beckoned.

The highest amounts were reported from Tamil Nadu. The India Met Department (IMD) says that conditions are becoming favourable for the onset over Coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and South Coastal Andhra Pradesh by Thursday. The rains are expected to extend to the rest of Tamil Nadu, South Interior Karnataka, Kerala and Rayalaseema during the next two days.

In what is the best signal yet that the easterly flows are getting organised, the rogue cyclonic circulation over the North-West Bay of Bengal has become less marked.

As if on cue, a trough that linked the South-West Bay to the North-West Bay and of some nuisance value, has shifted to being a more friendly South-West Bay to West-Central Bay alignment.

This would mean that the moisture brought in by the easterlies would get trapped, as it should, along the coast of Tamil Nadu and South Andhra Pradesh coast and will be dumped as seasonal rain.

Rounding off the helpful ecosystem is a persisting cyclonic circulation over the South-West Bay and adjoining Sri Lanka, which would get busier towards the weekend.

A counterpart circulation over East-Central and adjoining South-East Arabian Sea has shifted base to South Interior Karnataka.

Cricketing weather

The forecast for Thursday saw heavy rain at isolated places over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Kerala. Cricket lovers are anxiously monitoring the weather for Thiruvananthapuram on Thursday. The Kerala capital is scheduled to host the crucial one-day match between India and the touring West Indies, with India leading the series 2-1.

Global weather models do not rule out the possibility of evening thundershowers tomorrow on a day when the match is scheduled to begin at 1.30 pm.

At least one has predicted the possibility of isolated thunderstorms in the morning, then mainly cloudy conditions during the afternoon with thunderstorms and rain likely.

The IMD also largely favours the outlook for light showers, and adds that the neighbourhood of Thiruvananthapuram might receive heavier showers.
