Tea Board has fixed the average price for the green leaf in The Nilgiris in November as ₹14.72 a kg.

“This has been fixed as per Section 30 A of Tea Marketing Control Order based on the consolidated auction sale average of CTC teas from bought leaf factories during October”, Tea Board Deputy Director C S Hariprakash said.

He said that all bought leaf factories have been instructed to pay this price while buying their green leaf from the small growers this month.

He has instructed the field officers of the Board to ensure that no factory in their jurisdiction paid a price less than this while buying green leaf.

This price is less than ₹15.14 a kg fixed for October but more than ₹12.50 fixed for November last year.

“We are concerned that the Tea Board does not heed to our repeated plea to fix the green leaf price at the end of the month based on the average price obtained by our teas in the auctions”, Ramesh Bhojarajan, President, The Nilgiri Bought Leaf Tea Manufacturers’ Association, told Business Line .

“Only when the raw material price is fixed at the end of the month based on the price we get, there will be the real price recovery for the material cost we incurred during the month”, he detailed.

“Now, while we are happy that the small growers get a price protection, we are sad that we do not get any such protection for the teas we manufacture with this green leaf when we sell through the public auctions”, he lamented.
