Management is a living science and execution is the discipline of getting things done. Execution in business is one of the key functions as it brings in the desired or expected results, without execution there is no meaning to planning as it is an integral part of strategy, according to Mr Debasis Chatterji, CEO-Netxcell Ltd.

Mr Chatterji delivered a talk on ‘Execution in the corporate scenario' organised by the BL Club and sponsored by Tata Photon Plus at the TRR College of Engineering here. He emphasised the importance of execution as a management function since it is not just the job of the business leader alone but of each and every person.

Stressing that there is a lot of demand for skilled and disciplined professionals in the industry, effective execution happens when there are right people at the right place doing the right job. He suggested that students must do things which lead towards effective execution and explained about how a business leader should execute in a practical scenario

First, he should clearly identify and define the objectives to be achieved, then set a time line to achieve those pre-defined objectives, the third was to appreciate and reward those who execute well and bring results, to coach those who are not able to match up to the desired standards, the last being to use the results in an effective way through a feedback system.

If management is the art of getting things done then execution is creating a culture of getting things done in the organisation in such a way that execution with absolute precision becomes a norm.

The core process of execution has three main stages — strategy process, which defines where the business wants to go with the resources available within a given timeframe, people process, creating a leadership pipeline and defining people to execute, and operational process, which is to guide the people who execute. These three stages determine the path of execution in an organisation.

Key aspect

Another key aspect in the process of execution is the attitude of discipline and ownership. Mr Chatterji cited that today ex-Army officials are preferred by a lot of corporates for important posts because of the kind of discipline they possess.

Asked by students to give a practical example of effective execution in Netxcell, Mr Chatterji said that Netxcell provides back-end software solutions to almost all major telecom operators in the country, along with customer support solutions in real time for over 250 million mobile subscribers across India, through its live monitoring and support systems.

The tasks at such levels are executed at Netxcell with unmatched precision as even one billing gone wrong can be detrimental to the organisation's credibility.
