“India by regularly updating vehicle emission standards has become a leader in Asia after Japan, Singapore and Taiwan. China is still following us,” said Vikram Kirloskar, President, Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI).

ARAI is actively involved in framing regulations for Bharat Stage VI (BSVI). When it comes into force in March 2020, it is expected to bring much-needed changes in automotive industry in terms of emissions.

“With active involvement of the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), work on 70 to 80 regulations are being regularly upgraded and implemented. This includes noise, which is also one of the key element in safety regulation,” said Kirloskar.

He further added that “As part of the Bharat Stage VI regulations being formulated, ‘person inside the car’ and also ‘person outside’ (pedestrian) safety is being explored,” said Kirloskar.

SIAT-2019

Talking about the 16th Symposium on International Automotive Technology (SIAT) 2019 to be held at Pune from January 16 to 18, Kirloskar said the meet which is held once in two years is expected to showcase companies’ achievements in research and development.

“As we are moving towards implementing the Bharat Stage VI regulations, discussion at SIAT is expected to revolve around environment, energy security and Make in India initiatives,” he added.

Rashmi Urdhwareshe, Director, Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) said “The theme of SIAT 2019 is ‘Empowering Mobility – Safe and Intelligent Way’. Vehicle safety has long been an arena for breeding technological improvement and major advances are made by global organisations in passive safety to active safety to connected mobility, in both concept and technology.”

“At the event we hope to facilitate a knowledge-sharing platform for Indian manufacturers to inculcate such technology at the concept stage itself,” she added.

SIAT 2019 is also expected to focus on recent advances in various automotive areas, such as safety, emissions engines, noise, electric mobility, electronics, intelligent transportation, vehicle dynamics, materials, alternate fuels and simulation and modelling.

“It will also bring to fore innovative ideas and solutions in automotive technologies to meet future challenges,” said Urdhwareshe.

Light Weight Bus

“At the SIAT 2019, a special technical session will be held where in 120 research papers are being presented and there will be two plenary sessions wherein experts in the field are to talk on tending topics. A panel discussion is also planned on collaborative research for futuristic mobility solutions where experts CTOs, researchers and scientists are to share their knowledge,” said A A Badusha, Convenor - SIAT 2019.

One of the attractions of SIAT 2019 is demonstration of light weight bus designed by ARAI with advanced technologies developed indigenously by ARAI on autonomous vehicles, battery technology and intelligent vehicles.

A separate student poster presentation competition for undergraduate and post graduate engineering students and PhD research scholars from various universities is planned in three categories – automotive safety, sustainable mobility and smart vehicles.

An exposition wherein various national and international exhibitors are to showcase their latest and futuristic technologies in the areas such as BSVI, vehicle safety/ crash, electric mobility, vehicle telematics, NVH, simulation and modelling. There are in all 129 exhibitors showcasing their technologies.
