Cochin Shipyard Ltd (CSL) has commenced block erection of two 500 Pax-cum-150 T cargo vessels for the Andaman & Nicobar Administration. Nitin Gadkari, the Minister for Shipping, Road Transport and Highways, was the chief guest at the function. The block erection ceremony is one of the important milestones in the construction process of a ship.
These are the first two ships being built for the A&N Administration, each with a capacity of 500 passengers-cum-150 tonnes cargo. CSL has also been awarded contracts for two vessels with a capacity of 1,200 passengers-cum-1,000 tonnes of cargo for the A&N Administration, which are under construction. The contracts were awarded as part of the Government’s ‘Make-in-India’ initiative.
The vessels are designed and built as modern passenger vessels for inter-island services in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands and for occasional mainland transfer. Apart from the four passenger vessels, CSL is also constructing an indigenous aircraft carrier for the Indian Navy and a technology demonstration vessel for the Government.
