Larsen & Toubro (contractor) has been imposed a penalty of ₹1 crore for the incident involving the collapse of two I-Girders at Manapakkam, resulting in the demise of Ramesh (aged 43) from Nagercoil in Tamil Nadu.
While the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) provided an immediate ex-gratia compensation of ₹5 lakhs to the bereaved family, L&T extended ₹20 lakhs.
A source in CMRL said that as per the enquiry committee report submitted on Wednesday, it was found that the contractor was primarily responsible. The Chief Safety Manager–ESHS (Environmental, Social, Health & Safety), Senior ESHS Manager, has been held responsible. Action has been taken against both.
The General Consultant (GC) who is the supervising agency is held secondarily responsible. Action has been taken against the Safety Engineer and the Senior Deputy Resident Engineer under the GC. The officers identified as both contractor and GC have been removed from the project, according to CMRL sources.
