A total of 140.2 lakh hectares are expected to be under cultivation in Maharashtra during the 2012 kharif season.
This includes 96.7 lakh hectares under foodgrains which primarily are jowar, bajra, rice, lentils, groundnuts, sesame and sunflower. Cotton is expected to be grown on 43.5 lakh hectares.
The Government estimates that the requirement of seeds for foodgrains will be 18.75 lakh quintal.
A total of 19.27 lakh quintal of seeds will be available. The requirement for cotton is estimated to be 160 lakh packets against which 214 lakh packets will be available.
