The two-day national executive meeting of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) concluded here on Friday, once again revealing internal conflicts within the party leadership.

There were several amendments on the economic and political resolutions, resulting in the leadership failing to provide any fresh direction to its cadre on both fronts. The resolutions ended up as documents that merely analysed the situation.

The Gujarat Chief Minister, Mr Narendra Modi, emerged as the sole winner of the exercise after managing to evict his bête noire, Mr Sanjay Joshi, from the national executive.

Decision-making

Senior leaders such as Mr L.K Advani and Ms Sushma Swaraj chose not to attend the public rally, which led to sceptics pointing out that this was because they were annoyed at the decision to give a second chance to Party President, Mr Nitin Gadkari. The party spokespersons, however, vehemently denied any such grievance on the part of the top leadership.

Citing Mr Joshi's unceremonious exit, some leaders, sources said, were unhappy at the way decisions were taken in the party.

The party's political resolution said the UPA Government had neglected the poor in the last eight years. “In fact, all the claim of the India growth story has come under serious doubt and suspicion,” the document said, adding that drift and drag had become the hallmark of UPA-2.

The BJP, which has already announced a Bharat Bandh against the petrol price hike, decided to hold country-wide campaigns against the Centre.

Slowing economy

“Investment has slowed down; the industrial climate is very unfavourable and corruption adds to the cost. The economy has slowed down too,” the resolution said.

“The Government has practically no roadmap to address this serious issue, which has become almost a recurring feature. The mess in the management of economy, particularly the food economy, is happening when an ‘eminent economist' is the Prime Minister for the last eight years,” the document said.

The party claimed that the people look up to the BJP because of the Congress's failure.

“It is our duty to rise to the occasion measure up to the expectation and assure the people of the country that the BJP indeed is the instrument which will redeem India,” the resolution added.
